Love it or hate it, Autumn 2013 is already upon us.

For couriers, the times of driving down sunny country lanes are over for another year and it’s time to start thinking about the many seasonal hazards that you may have forgotten about.

Autumn is here! driving tips from insureCOURIER

Our courier insurance team know that the Autumn rain and slippy roads make you more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident than in the summer.   We receive a lot of calls from usually ‘good drivers’ which often relate to easily avoidable mistakes.

Read our top tips to avoid claiming on your courier insurance policy this Autumn…

  • Reduce speed when driving over fallen leaves.  A patch of wet leaves can be as dangerous as driving though standing water. They are a common cause of skidding and can make potholes invisible.
  • Clear windscreens of condensation/ ice.  Not being able to see properly is a common cause of courier accidents in the Autumn. Always give yourself extra time to ensure visibility even if this means getting up earlier on cold dark mornings 🙁
  • Drive correctly in fog. When driving in fog always ensure you use dimmed headlights to improve visibility and leave adequate space between you and the vehicle in front. If you don’t and they break suddenly due to an unseen hazard, you could be faced with an expensive claim.
  • Look out for dears! Although not an obvious one, its estimated 74,000 road traffic accidents are caused each year by drivers swerving to avoid dears so it’s important to be on the lookout.
