If you carry goods for someone else, you need goods in transit insurance to protect you against claims relating to the loss or damage of them while they are in your care.

A lot of companies that use a delivery service may also ask to see proof that you have goods in transit insurance before agreeing to work with you. What’s more, it can also be used as a useful selling tool for new courier start-ups that reassures clients that their goods are protected.

Goods in transit insurance isn’t always automatically included in a typical courier vehicle policy so it’s important not to assume this. You can always add it to your policy for a small additional premium or take it out separately.

When taking out your cover, you will need to specify some details regarding the nature of your work, i.e. the type of goods that you deliver and the frequency. Goods that are deemed to be high risk or theft attractive, for example iPhones or other electrical items, may be more expensive to insure than low risk cargo such as newspapers.

Policies will vary greatly depending on your individual circumstances. However, our standard cover starts at £10,000 worth of goods with only £250 excess. This means that in the event of damage to the goods you are transporting, you will be paid out up £10,000 to replace them providing that you pay a £250 excess*.

When taking out your cover it is important to check that the liability limit will provide you with sufficient cover should an accident occur. It’s also essential to read the small print carefully to access any limitations on your policy as some courier insurance brokers won’t pay out for damage to goods as a result of bad packaging or abandoning them on purpose.
